‘Wolf Run helped my focus’
Jumping down from the
wall, I feel the chilly splash of thick mud hit my legs. My trainers are completely waterlogged, my hair is a mess and I’m splattered with dirt. But through it all, I’m grinning – I feel years younger and full of vitality.
I’ve always been healthconscious and have kept an eye on my weight over the years, remaining a steady size 10/12.
But I have a condition called hypercholesterolemia – so I have very high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It’s a lifelong thing but, six years ago it took a turn for the worse, with my cholesterol rocketing.
My doctor prescribed statins and told me that, while diet wouldn’t change anything, exercise might help. Feeling determined, I joined a gym but I found it repetitive and it was a real struggle to stay focused.
Then my husband David, who was also trying to get fit, started military fitness classes. So I joined him for obstacle runs and was hooked.
The courses were intense, involving distances of around 20 miles. So when I developed a bad shoulder, I had to stop.
Disappointed, I began to research lower-intensity options, and eventually discovered Wolf Run – a 10k, cross-country obstacle challenge that takes place four times a year, in Worcestershire and London.
I signed up and began to train. With something to focus on and work towards, I started running three times a week with David and felt my fitness levels improve.
My first race was April 2017 and I really enjoyed myself. There was an amazing sense of camaraderie among participants, and there was always someone to pull me out of the mud if I needed it.
I’m better toned now and, more importantly, my cholesterol has dropped.
For me, it’s a real win, win situation!
