Beauty: Conscious buys to save the planet

Conscious beauty buys to leave you looking and feeling good

Naked Packaging

Nearly every beauty product we buy is wrapped in plastic. As more and more of it makes its way into our oceans and landfill sites, it’s time to change the way we shop. So what can we do?

1 Choose Solid Products

Noticing the waste that the beauty industry produces, Lush co-founder Mark Constantine was inspired to create solid products, ‘which need very little to protect or contain them’.

Lush is doing a lot to minimise the effect of plastic and wasteful packaging on the environment. Try one of these and do your bit… Lush The Rough With The Smooth Body Scrub, £6.50; Godiva Shampoo Bar, £7.50, and Sugar Plum Fairy Lip Tint, £6.25

2 Swap Shower Gel For Soap

Not only does soap last longer than shower gel, it also uses 100% less plastic. There are some beautiful scented soaps around, and you’ll be saving the planet at the same time.

3 Buy Refillable Containers

Not enough companies are doing this. Until 2002, The Body Shop used to offer a shampoo refill service, but not since then. L’Occitane currently has a selection of refills that use 90% less packaging than the standard products.
