Shrewsbury

-

Discover Shropshire’s medieval county town. Once home to Charles Darwin, and with a typically Tudor centre, it’s a place steeped in history – and you don’t have to go far to find it. Carved walls and historic mansions line the quirky streets and, with the River Severn surrounding it, the town has lots to offer those in search of a more scenic break.

What to do

Wander into the town centre to enjoy the beautiful riverside and nearby kids’ play area in Quarry Park. Dingle Gardens are delightful, with loads of quirky statues and objects to discover. Or why not take a boat ride on the Severn (sabrinaboat.co.uk; 01743 369741) or enjoy a trip to the nearby cinema and leisure centre.

If you fancy yourself as a sleuth, take the walking murdermystery tour ‘Darwin’s Shrewsbury’, courtesy of Treasure Trails (treasuretrails. co.uk). You’ll get a guided tour of Darwin’s birthplace while solving clues along the way. The trail is about two hours and is two miles long – and if you get stuck on a clue, you can text for more hints!

The Museum & Art Gallery is also worth a visit. Situated in the old Music Hall on The Square, there are changing exhibitions, so check to see what’s on. There’s plenty to absorb visitors, young and old (www.shrewsbury museum.org.uk).

What to eat

Among the many fine eateries in town, Lyons’ Den Gourmet Burger restaurant is well worth a visit. Its extensive menu includes the Filthy Burger (6oz beef burger with Monterey Jack cheese, streaky bacon, onion ring, BBQ pulled pork, lettuce and tomato) – highly recommended. The amazing Roasted Strawberry Shake is a must-try, too (lyonsdengourmetburger.co.uk).

Just a couple of miles from the town of Shrewsbury, Love2Stay is a newly built caravan park – the result of a £3.5million investment. There’s an extensive programme of kids’ activities, as well as plenty of things for the grown-ups to do.
