Cutting out

Following the photocopied templates, cut out two hats from folded red felt and hat bands from folded white felt. Cut one face and one nose from skin-tone felt and four hands from folded skin-tone felt. From white felt, cut one front beard, one back beard, two eyebrows, four cuffs, two waistbands and a moustache cut on the fold. Cut two bodysuits from red felt and four boots from black felt.

To make up

1 On the face piece, stitch two French knots for the eyes with three strands of black embroidery thread. Backstitch a belt buckle onto one of the white waistbands with two strands of black embroidery thread.

2 Overlap the hat pieces with the hat bands and glue in place. Overlap the face piece with the front beard and front hat piece, glue together and allow to dry. Glue the front beard to the front bodysuit. Repeat for the back pieces, gluing the back beard to the back hat and back bodysuit.

3 Glue the eyebrows, nose and moustache to the face and beard. Glue the cuffs and waistbands to the front and back body suits.

4 Pair up the hands and boots and blanket stitch around the edge, leaving the tops open for stuffing. Fill with stuffing and stitch closed. Sew the hands and boots to the wrong side of the back piece with small tacking stitches.

5 Align the edges of the completed front and back pieces, and blanket stitch all the way around. Stuff as you sew to make it easier to fill the arms and legs.

6 Finish by gluing or stitching a mini pom-pom to the tip of Santa’s hat.
