Strong and sturdy
Oxen are believed to have been present at the birth of Jesus. They were also celebrated in Thomas Hardy’s poem, The Oxen, which invokes a popular West Country legend – that on Christmas Day all the farm animals, including the ox, kneel in homage to the birth of the baby Jesus. People have harnessed their strength since around 4000BC, and despite their size, they are generally docile creatures. Find out more at spana.org
