Oxen are be­lieved to have been present at the birth of Je­sus. They were also cel­e­brated in Thomas Hardy’s poem, The Oxen, which in­vokes a pop­u­lar West Coun­try le­gend – that on Christ­mas Day all the farm an­i­mals, in­clud­ing the ox, kneel in homage to the birth of the baby Je­sus. Peo­ple have har­nessed their strength since around 4000BC, and de­spite their size, they are gen­er­ally docile crea­tures. Find out more at
