FROM BOOK TO SCREEN
A Christmas Carol has been adapted many times for theatre, radio, TV and film. Famous actors who have played or voiced the part of Ebenezer Scrooge include Albert Finney (1970), George C Scott (1984), Patrick Stewart (1999), Ross Kemp (2000) and Jim Carey (2009). The earliest film version – from 1901, just 31 years after Dickens’ death in 1870 – was a silent movie, though only fragments remain now. The 1951 version with Alastair Sim is still much-loved, as are the animated versions Mr Magoo’s Christmas Carol (1962), Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), left, and even The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992).
