your friends will be happy to help

-

I’m very fortunate to have got to 72 and never had an operation. I’m due to have something minor done and I’m a bit scared. It’s day surgery so I need someone to take me home and be with me for 24 hours. I moved to the town I live in about 10 years ago. I’m very independent and spend a lot of time by myself so I haven’t made close friends, just acquaintances. My close friends all live in different places. I don’t know who to ask. I’m wondering if I should miss the surgery.

Tina, Market Harborough I think you know that you shouldn’t miss it. The operation is being done for a reason and leaving your condition will only compromise your health. Have you talked to your close friends about this? They may be very happy to stay with you for a night or two to support you. I think people are often flattered when they’re asked. Your acquaintances may also be very happy to help and feel pleased that you can trust them to look after you. If neither of these is possible, talk to your doctor or the practice nurse and see what suggestions they have. They may well know of an organisation that can help or they may arrange for you to stay a night in the hospital. This won’t be the first time someone has had this dilemma.

Keren welcomes your letters, emails and texts, but she cannot reply to individual cases and will select correspondence at random for publication.
