Hungry hound

-

My dog is terrible for stealing food all year round. Is there anything I should be extra careful with around Christmas?

I grew up with labradors in the house, so I know exactly what you mean! There’s generally more food around at Christmas, and with so much going on it’s easy to forget and leave something within reach. It may be best to shut your dog away when you are preparing and serving a big meal, as you’ll have plenty else on your mind.

Plates of nibbles on a low table are an easy target for a dog, so watch out for that one, but don’t forget the food recycling too. Just because food no longer appeals to you doesn’t mean it’s of no interest to a hungry pet!

Some of the foods we eat at Christmas can be toxic to pets (see box) but one important thing to watch out for is bones. Cooked turkey bones in particular are very dangerous as they tend to splinter and can get stuck in your dog’s stomach. Be very careful with the carcass, as well as leftovers on plates, and move them to a secure bin outside as soon as possible.
