This includes relieving the pressure with specially designed foam mattresses, cushions or other equipment. Trained nurses can monitor ulcers and apply dressings containing gels, seaweed extract and other substances to absorb fluid and stimulate new cell growth.

Each area should have a tissue viability nurse who can provide expert assessment­s and advice. Antibiotic tablets, dressings or even surgery are sometimes needed. But, even with the right treatment for the ulcer and underlying causes, healing may take weeks.
