4 (4) (5) 100g (439m) balls of James C Brett Baby 4ply (100% acrylic) in Soft Blue (12)*. Pair each of 2.75mm (No. 12) and 3.25mm (No. 10) knitting needles; 4 stitch holders.

TENSION

28 stitches and 36 rows, to 10 x 10cm, over stocking stitch, using 3.25mm needles; 28 stitches and 40 rows, to 10 x 10cm, over pattern, using 3.25mm needles. ABBREVIATI­ONS

Rib row: [K1, p1] to the end. Last row forms rib. Rib another 30 rows.

Next row: Increase row: Rib 8 (7) (6), up1, [rib 12 (14) (16), up1] 8 times, rib 8 (7) (6) – 121 (135) (149) sts.

Change to 3.25mm needles. Beginning with a k row, ss 70 (66) (62) rows.

Continue in ss and introduce lace yoke pattern as follows: 1st row: K59 (66) (73), for yoke, k2tog, yf, k60 (67) (74). 2nd and every alternate row: P to end.

3rd row: K58 (65) (72), for yoke, k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo, k58 (65) (72).

5th row: K52 (59) (66), for yoke, k2tog, yf, *k3, k2tog, yf, k3, yf, skpo, k2, k2tog, yf*, k53 (60) (67).

7th row: K51 (58) (65), for yoke, k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo, *k3, yf, k3tog, yf, k3, k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo*, k51 (58) (65).

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and 3 (2) (1) following 4th row(s), then 33 (38) (43) following alternate rows – 39 (43) (47) sts.

P 1 row, then slip remaining sts onto a st holder.

FRONT

Work as given for back to **. Dec 1 st at each end of next row and 3 (2) (1) following 4th row(s), then 22 (27) (32) following alternate rows – 61 (65) (69) sts.

Divide for neck: Next row: P21 (22) (23) and slip these sts onto a st holder for right side neck, p19 (21) (23) sts and slip these sts onto a st holder for front neck, p to end and continue on these last 21 (22) (23) sts for left side neck. Left side neck: Dec 1 st at armhole edge on next row and 9 following alternate rows, and at the same time, dec 1 st at neck edge on first 9 (10) (11) of these rows – 2 sts. Next row: P to end. Next row: K2tog and fasten off. Right side neck: With right side of work facing, rejoin yarn and work as given for left side neck to end.

SLEEVES (BOTH ALIKE)

With 2.75mm needles, cast on 54 (58) (64) sts and work 23 rows in rib as given for back.

Increase row: Rib 3 (1) (2), up1, [rib 8 (7) (6), up1] 6 (8) (10 times, rib 3 (1) (2) – 61 (67) (75) sts.

Change to 3.25mm needles. Beginning with a k row, ss 4 (2) (4) rows, then inc 1 st at each end of next row and the 12 (10) (12) following 8th (10th) (8th) rows – 87 (89) (101) sts.

Beginning with a p row, ss 3 (1) (3) row(s) straight.

Continue in ss with lace yoke pattern as follows:

1st pattern row: K42 (43)

(49), k2tog, yf, k43 (44) (50). 2nd pattern row: P to end.

3rd pattern row: K41 (42) (48), k2tog, yf, k1, yf, skpo, k41 (42) (48).

4th pattern row: P to end.

Last 4 rows set the position of the lace yoke pattern. Keeping continuity of the pattern throughout, and introducin­g an extra pattern repeat on each side every 4 rows, to match back, work nil (4) (nil) rows, then inc 1 st at each end of next row and the 2 (1) (2) following 8 (10) (8) row(s) – 93 (93) (107) sts. Pattern 11 (13) (11) rows straight.

Shape raglan top: Keeping continuity of pattern, cast off 4 (5) (6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows – 85 (83) (95) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next row and the 3 (7) (4) following 4th rows, then 33 (28) (37) following alternate rows – 11 sts. P 1 row. Slip remaining 11 sts onto a st holder. NECKBAND

First, join right raglan seams, then join left sleeve to front only. With right side facing, and with 2.75mm needles, k11 sts from left sleeve holder, pick up and k17 (18) (19) sts from row-ends of left front neck, k19 (21) (23) sts from front neck st holder, pick up and k17 (18) (19) sts from row-ends of right front neck, k11 sts from right sleeve holder, and finally, k39 (43) (47) sts from back neck st holder – 114 (122) (130) sts. Work 12 rib rows as given for back. Cast off loosely in rib. TO MAKE UP

Join remaining raglan seam and neck rib seam. Join side and sleeve seams.
