Prune bushes

Hard-prune overgrown deciduous evergreens and hedges, such as laurel and yew, to encourage a growth spurt in spring. Conifers prefer light, regular pruning.

Chit potatoes

Put potatoes in a container in a cool spot with plenty of indirect light. After two weeks, they should grow deep-green shoots around 2cm long.

Sow veg

Begin sowing hardy veg in trays indoors, ready to plant out when they are big enough. Beetroot, spring onions, spinach and lettuce are good options for February.
