Tawny owls

-

The early bird gets the worm, and for tawny owls, nesting in early spring helps parents feed their young, as they can spot prey more easily among sparse vegetation. These woodland-dwelling birds prefer to make their homes in the cavity of a large tree. However, if a suitable hole isn’t available, they’ll happily commandeer an abandoned squirrel’s drey or crow’s nest. Two or three round, white eggs are laid in March, hatching after a month. The fuzzy owlets fledge after five weeks, but will hang around the nest for up to three months, begging their parents for food throughout the night.
