The fast way to youthful joints is to strengthen the muscles that support them. That means taking regular weight-bearing exercise, advises Tim Allardyce, chartered physiother­apist and director of surreyphys­io.co.uk. ‘Exercise becomes more – not less – important as you age, when your muscles naturally shrink and become weaker. Start by trying to walk for 20 minutes a day, five days a week.

ANTI-AGERS

✣ Legs Resting your back against a wall, gently bend your knees and slide down the wall.

✣ Abs and hips Lying flat on your back, hover your legs up and down in the air in a scissor pattern.

✣ Shoulders Place an exercise band under one foot. Using the opposite hand, stretch the band diagonally across your chest and above your head.
