Ways to help
✢ Specific dietary components aren’t thought to cause ulcerative colitis, but try eating smaller, more frequent meals. Hydrate with water, and avoid caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol.
✢ Ask your doctor about food supplements – you might not be getting enough dietary vitamins and minerals. Try temporary low-residue or low-fibre diets during flare-ups.
✢ Keep a food diary to monitor what you eat. It can be helpful to see which foods you tolerate and which make your symptoms worse.
✢ Talking to others with the condition can provide support and comfort. Crohn’s and Colitis UK provides links to sources of information and support.
