Q Is liver cirrhosis always due to too much alcohol?
AIn the UK, the most common causes of cirrhosis, an inflammatory hardening of the liver tissue, are drinking too much alcohol over many years or being infected with the hepatitis C virus for a long time. However, there are many other causes, and there is an increasing problem with a condition called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which causes excess fat to build up in the liver. NASH is on the rise due to our increasing problems with being overweight or obese and reduced physical activity, meaning it may soon overtake alcohol and hepatitis C as the most common cause. Other causes of cirrhosis include other viral infections such as hepatitis B infection, inherited liver diseases, such as haemochromatosis, and autoimmune diseases. The good news is that in the earlier stages the liver generally has great powers of recovery and tissue regeneration, so it’s possible to recover if the cause is managed properly.
