I want to carry on working

-

QI work full-time and long hours, and have a health condition that is degenerative. Although I don’t think my working is bad for me, my family and friends keep nagging me to quit. They say I’m selfish as it may worsen my condition, but I find being busy is good for me and I feel fulfilled. How do I tell them I am not being selfish and that I’m managing myself the best way I can? Vicky, Windsor

AIt’s interesting when someone says you’re being selfish. It often means you’re not doing what they think is good for you and, of course, them. They are very concerned about you and, understandably, want you well and in their lives for as long as possible. Where their argument is flawed is that they seem to think you should be tucked up at home

preserving yourself, while you say the best way to feel as fit as you can is by being busy. Explain that you all have the same goal, but that you have to do this your way so that you keep yourself healthy, even if it isn’t the way they’d choose for you.
