Don’t stop moving

-

Despite inactivity being one of the major causes of joint issues, 22% of Brits have a sedentary lifestyle. ‘Joints stiffen up if they’re in the same position for long periods,’ explains GP Dr Sarah Jarvis. Throughout the day, get up from your chair and move to preserve a full range of joint motion. Whether that’s a quick walk at lunchtime, or a lap of the garden while your tea brews – even short periods of activity encourages blood flow, decreases stiff muscles and relieves tired joints. Regular exercise also retains muscle strength to ensure joints are adequately supported. ‘Mix up your movements to reduce the impact on load-bearing joints. Try cycling, swimming or focus on your flexibility with a Pilates class,’ says physiotherapist Sammy Margo. When exercising, wear supportive shoes that offer cushioning to protect joints and ligaments.
