Bakewell pudding and tart

-

Derbyshire

This delightful treat is said to have been invented by accident in 1820. According to legend, a Mrs Greaves of the White Horse Inn in Bakewell, left instructions to her cook that she failed to follow, and a new pudding was born. It has evolved over the years from hot pudding to the more widely known and rather different Bakewell tart, a shortcrust pastry tart with the original almond custard replaced with frangipane, topped with a scattering of flaked almonds.
