Plant onions

Plant onion and shallot sets, spacing them at least 10-15cm apart. Keep on top of weeding around them and enjoy harvests from summer through to autumn.

Sow annuals Hardy annuals that tolerate light frosts can be sown outdoors from March. These include California poppies, bishop’s weed and nasturtium­s.

Top-dress pots Using your hand, gently fork off the top

3-5cm layer of earth without disturbing the plant’s root system. Replace with a layer of nutrient-rich compost.
