Carew Castle
Near Tenby, Pembrokeshire You get a huge amount of history at this impressive castle, as the site covers several different eras. It started as a Norman fort (though there’s evidence of even earlier settlements), was adapted in Tudor times, then morphed into an elegant Elizabethan mansion. Beside it is a tidal mill, one of only five in the UK, in which you can see the original machinery. There’s also an 11th-century Celtic cross and a medieval bridge. Phew!
Parking is free and the mile-long circular walk is suitable for buggies and wheelchairs.
