Skara Brae

-

Stromness, Orkney This prehistoric village is remote and maybe more of an armchair visit for many, but it is truly special. Inhabited around 5,000 years ago – that’s before the Giza Pyramids and Stonehenge were built! – it was only discovered in 1850, when a wild storm ripped up the grass to reveal the stone buildings beneath. It is very well preserved and, amazingly, the original stone beds, dressers and seats can still be seen.

If you can visit, there’s a replica house to explore, a visitor centre and a tea room – all well worth checking out.
