I’m apprehensive about a joint account

-

QMy second husband and I have always kept our finances separate as we both brought money into the relationship. We both pay into a joint account for living expenses. I brought a lot more in than him when we married, and I have savings. We are now planning to retire and would need to live partly off my savings. He says he doesn’t want to be dependent on me so has asked me to put this money into a joint account. What if we divorce and I get left with nothing? Jude, Godalming

AIt sounds like a good idea. I’m wondering what your real concerns are. Have you any reason to believe you’ll divorce? Is this money insecurity rather than a marriage one? Does this situation relate to money issues from a previous relationship or even your childhood? Make sure your concerns are really about now. If they are, then talk to him and a financial adviser so you can set things up in a way that is safe for you, and you can relax knowing you have a secure retirement plan.
