Diabetes risk

-

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole, are considered safe, although long-term use is linked to cardiovascular events. New studies associate long-term PPI use with type 2 diabetes risk. The Nurses’ Health Studies and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study with 204,689 participants initially free of diabetes showed over 10,000 diabetes cases over two years of follow-up, giving regular PPI users a 24% higher risk of diabetes than non-users, increasing with duration of use.
