The Fife Arms, Braemar

When acclaimed gallery owners and art collectors, Iwan and Manuela Wirth, of Hauser & Wirth, set their sights on creating their own hotel, you knew it would be something special. Back in 2018, they developed a neglected Victorian coaching inn in the Cairngorms with the help of star designer Russell Sage. Art is the focus; from a giant Louise Bourgeois spider sculpture in the courtyard to a specially commissioned painted ceiling by acclaimed Chinese artist Zhang Enli. With dozens of works by local Scottish artists, and curated displays of historic objects and artefacts, it’s a feast for the senses. In addition, each of the 46 sumptuously designed rooms is dedicated to a local place, person, event or theme, such as Robert Louis Stevenson and Lord Byron.
