Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) was born in Thornton, West Yorkshire, on 21 April. The eldest of the three famous Brontë sisters, she left school at 14 to educate siblings Emily and Anne. Her debut novel, The Professor, was rejected by publishers but her second, Jane Eyre, was accepted in 1847 and remains one of the great English classics today.
