St Edmund: England’s first patron saint

-

Spare a thought for St Edmund, who was England’s original patron saint. Called Edmund the Martyr, he was the Anglo-Saxon King of East Anglia and, like St George, he was killed for his Christian beliefs. The town of Bury St Edmunds is named after this saint, whose feast day of 20 November is still celebrated in Suffolk.
