1 May is International Dawn Chorus Day this year. First marked in Birmingham in the 1980s, it’s now celebrated in more than 80 countries. In the cool morning air, birdsong can carry up to 20 times further than at other times of the day, and different birds join at different times, with robins often starting first. Always joyous, the dawn chorus is a sign of spring and new beginnings. The RSPB has developed a handy audio guide to identify each bird’s songs, which you’ll find at rspb.org.uk. We’d love to know which birds you hear!
