Parking meters
Though perhaps not the most cherished feature of our streets, the first parking meters popped up in London’s Grosvenor Square in 1958. Motorists paid sixpence for an hour. Before long there were 750,000 across the UK, but since 2006, with the decline in coinage, these have been phased out.
