Top Hat bins

Sheffield’s ‘cutlery king’ David Mellor was best known as a designer of silver knives and forks, but he also gave the UK the Top Hat litter bin in 1957. With its bright yellow basket held in a galvanised steel frame, these were once a common sight in public spaces. Mellor also designed bollards, bus shelters, post boxes and traffic lights, which can be seen at his museum in Hathersage in the Derbyshire Peak District.
