Banners and flags waved across Britain on 8 May 1945, as World War Two came to an end. Victory in Europe Day, known as VE Day, was celebrated with street parties, singing and dancing. Prime Minister Winston Churchill made a formal radio announceme­nt in the afternoon to say the Allied Forces had accepted an unconditio­nal surrender from Germany.
