3 foods that nourish your skin
✣ Kiwi is great fruit for your gut-skin axis, says nutritionist Shona Wilkinson (drvegan.com). ‘Healthy gut motility helps your body flush out toxins. If they’re not removed via the gut, your body will push them out through your skin – and this can cause inflammation, redness and acne.’
✣ Berries and cherries are plentiful in proanthocyanidins. The darker the berries, the more of these they contain. ‘They are potent antioxidants that protect your skin from harmful oxidants from the sun, pollution and poorer dietary choices,’ says Shona.
✣ Chia seeds and flaxseeds are a rich vegetable source of omega 3 (also found in oily fish). ‘This is an essential fat that keeps skin flexible, moisturised and less likely to crack or flake,’ says Shona. ‘As omega 3 also boosts production of anti-inflammatory hormones, it will reduce skin inflammation and redness.’
