Ways to help
Decide it’s time. Enlist help – don’t try it alone. Reduce acquiring first, then clear one small area, with a time limit for decision making.
Don’t feel pressured to do a big clear-out, which reduces motivation to make changes. It’s psychologically traumatic and unlikely to support lasting behaviour change.
Take a break if you find yourself becoming anxious. Do gentle exercise and use relaxation exercises. Celebrate successes and let go of setbacks.
See your GP about CBT or medication. Look online – OCD-UK (ocduk.org; 01332 588 112) may help. The British Psychological Society (bps.org.uk) has advice and leaflets.
