Otterton, East Devon
There are now 25 busy beavers in the River Otter near Otterton, where you can watch them build lodges for their young (‘kits’). Since the species has been extinct in the UK for centuries, beaver-watching is something of a novelty. If you spot them, you’ll be among the first people in England to see them in 400 years. Hopefully you’ll find a stable otter population – hence the town’s name – plus kingfishers, dippers and grey wagtails.
