On this day in history
Mary Queen of Scots married the Earl of Bothwell at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, in Edinburgh, on 15 May 1567, three months after the murder of her husband Lord Darnley. Just before their marriage, Elizabeth I sent Mary a letter warning her of rumours beginning to circulate that the main suspect was Bothwell. Most historians agree that he plotted it, but they are undecided over Mary’s involvement.
