Chronic pain

-

This type of pain happens when our body continues to send signals to our brain, even after an injury heals. It affects around half the adult population and can last years, limiting mobility and reducing flexibility, strength and endurance.

‘Experts used to recommend bed rest, but this is the worst possible approach,’ says Dr Thiyagarajan. ‘Prolonged periods of inactivity can make pain last longer, as it causes our bodies to stiffen, making bones and muscles weaken, causing more pain in the long run.’

‘If pain is disrupting your everyday life and is unbearable to manage, consult your GP,’ says Dr Thiyagarajan. Getting help early can also prevent it from worsening.
