President Barack Obama is a great favourite of the Queen’s and in 2009, pictures showed First Lady Michelle and Her Majesty with their arms around one another – and nobody seemed to mind. Michelle later said they had bonded over tired feet. ‘I did what’s instinctive to me any time I feel connected to a new person,’ she wrote. ‘If I hadn’t done the proper thing, I had at least done the human thing. I daresay the Queen was OK with it too because she pulled closer, resting a gloved hand lightly on the small of my back.’
