Indira Gandhi
On a 1983 tour of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty beams as she stands alongside the first – and only – female prime minister of India. The Queen’s relationship with Indian leaders goes back to her earliest years on the throne. In 1947 the great independence leader, Mahatma Gandhi (not related to Indira) hand-wove a piece of cloth as a wedding present for Princess Elizabeth. In 2018, she regifted it to current prime minister Narendra Modi when he visited the UK.
