‘Lovely to see you again,’ smiled Johnson on 23 June last year, when he met the Queen after a 15-month gap in one-to-one audiences. The usually private meeting was televised because it marked a return to normal when the pandemic strictures eased, as they had been forced to meet via video calls since lockdowns. So, they’ve been together in the same room much less frequently than with her other prime ministers. Her Majesty sent a private message wishing him a speedy recovery when he was seriously ill in hospital with COVID-19.
