Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh
When the Queen has official engagements in Scotland, she decamps to a palace steeped in history. The Palace of Holyroodhouse has a close association with some of Scotland’s most famous figures, including Mary, Queen of Scots, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile, it has served as the principal royal residence of Scotland since the 16th century. You can visit Mary’s chambers, including her bedroom and the small supper room where she was dining the night her jealous husband, Lord Darnley, had her private secretary, David Rizzio, killed in front of her. Less gruesome are the plush State Apartments, hung with priceless tapestries, the imposing Throne Room and the vibrant Palace Gardens. Tickets from £17.50; rct.uk/ visit/palace-of-holyroodhouse
