The hybrid class that’ s giving Hi it a whole new meaning

WHAT IS IT?

The Method at Studio One fuses mindfulness and HIIT for a seriously unique workout. Although focusing on cardio and strength building through a combination of totalbody and muscle-isolation exercises, the class is peppered with mindful transitions throughout, including child’s pose, downward dog and swan dives into forward folds. Refusing to abandon its holistic roots, the class sews yoga, Pilates, dance cardio, barre and boxing into its dynamic for a full-body workout with a twist. The punchline? Striving for ‘flow’ throughout the class, The Method advocates active downtime, meaning you’re constantly working for the full 45 minutes.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Working in short, sharp bursts is the beauty of HIIT. Not only is it mentally easier to work through, but it’s an extremely effective way to burn calories, torch fat and tone up. The downside is that it’s incredibly fast paced and intense; blink and you’ve pretty much missed it. The Method, on the other hand, somehow manages to retain the intensity but slow down the pace, so not only is your body getting a thorough workout, but your mind can, too. The class is also broken up into five circuits based on key muscle groups – obliques, triceps, glutes, upper back and stabiliser muscles (inner thighs and external rotators) – so you truly are getting a full-body workout.

HOW HARD IS IT?

Don’t let the serene studio fool you, this class will make you sweat. Thinking we were in for 45 minutes of chilled-out yoga poses, when we started sweating 10 minutes in we knew this class meant business. Each circuit (of which there are five) is made up of two totalbody exercises and two isolation exercises – both alternated – before transitioning on to the next. Think plié squats, plank variations, clams, bicep curls and donkey kicks – movements may be mat-based but they’re certainly not easy. The hard work is worth it though and each session finishes with a twominute savasana to reflect on the session.
