Dance like no one is watching
Find your rhythm with movement meditation and set your spirit free
Rather go to a dance class than sit down and meditate? Fear not, just because you enjoy a good boogie doesn’t mean you have to forego the benefits of meditation. In fact, with the goal of many meditation traditions being to reach a state of enlightened and centred ecstasy, dancing is an ideal way to achieve a relaxed and blissful state.
Conscious physical movement is perfectly suited to being more fully present, as it invites you to respond to your environment with moment-to-moment awareness. Dance meditation is especially effective, as it has no structured moves or set steps to follow. Instead, you allow your body to respond intuitively to the music and guidance given by the facilitator. And, by moving as your mind and body needs, you can shift your energy, release unwanted thoughts and emotions, and find a new sense of freedom.
If you haven’t heard of it before, Flow Dance Meditation, created by wellness expert Lindsay
Jay and music curator Nathan Burroughs, is a new therapeutic practice designed to help you feel more confident and grounded in your body, while releasing anxiety and boosting feelings of happiness and gratitude. With no pressure to perform, you simply accept where you are in the moment and, with guidance from Jay, start exploring how your body wants to move, with eyes closed if that feels easier. ‘There’s no right or wrong way to move,’ she says, ‘no fancy choreography to follow. You simple connect with how you’re feeling and start to move from that place. So you tune in with yourself and set yourself free.’
