SKIING AND ALL AUSTRIA THE WINE IN...

-

WHAT? Wein am Berg Festival WHERE? Sölden, Austria WHY? You want to set the slopes on fire and fill your face. HOW MUCH? Double rooms from around £363 per night on a gourmet half-board basis; central-soelden.com

Think James Bond in Spectre, which launched this Austrian resort into the spotlight after it formed the backdrop to Daniel Craig’s stunts in 2015. Just an hour’s taxi ride from Innsbruck airport – two hours from London – it’s the perfect long weekend escape. Add mouthwatering Michelin-star dinners and picturesque glacial skiing and you’re on to a winner. With more than 140km of piste, top-of-the-range cable cars and not one but two glaciers, Sölden has something for everyone. Thanks to these glaciers, their season lasts till mid-may – almost a month later than most resorts in Europe. Stay at Das Central hotel, an oasis of calm and luxury in the centre of the bustling town. If you want to eat like a queen, time your trip near the end of the season for the annual Wein am Berg festival. Wine producers and first-class chefs descend on the hotel for one weekend at the end of April to showcase their finest produce. Experience wine tasting at over 3,000m at a bar made from ice, set against a backdrop of blue skies and snow-covered mountains. The taste of the wine actually changes at different altitudes – magic! All tuckered out from all that skiing? Well, lucky the hotel has a spa that spans three floors and 1,500m2. But this isn’t just any spa, it’s a Venetian-inspired ‘water world’ complete with lifesize gondola (Instagram gold) and, oh, just the 10 different saunas and steam rooms. Return feeling refreshed and a little smug because you’ve skied off all those seven-course dinners – and learnt a thing or two about wine, like the fact that some winegrowers spray their grapes with chamomile tea instead of pesticides. Who knew? Well, you do, now.
