HOW TO BE A JOINER

Kate Dale from This Girl Can reveals how you can go from naysayer to team player

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Look for beginner or taster sessions that cater for newbies. They’ll run through the rules and help you practise basic skills in a fun, informal way.

KIT YOURSELF OUT

You probably don’t need anything more specialised than a sports bra and a pair of trainers, but do some research to get a sense of what’s expected and you’ll feel less anxious.

DON’T OVERTHINK IT

Essentially, it’s just a bit of fun. But do think about what will make you feel more confident about going. That could mean taking along a friend or wearing your favourite pair of leggings.

REMEMBER, YOU CAN LEAVE

If you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, expect to feel discombobulated, but give it a chance. However, if you decide you really hate it, know that you can walk away at any time. You’re the customer and you’re in charge.

CONGRATULATE YOURSELF

Whether it turns out to be a oneoff or the start of a new obsession, pat yourself on the back for giving it a go. The hardest part of getting active is always deciding to join in – and you just did it.
