MY FIT LIFE
We find out what makes model Iskra Lawrence tick
FUEL
Busy days start with a smoothie, boosted with plenty of fruit and veggies. I love that something I’m able to grab so easily can leave me feeling nourished. Although, if I have a bit more time, I’ll head out for eggs Benedict. I never drink tea or coffee – I keep my energy up by drinking two to three litres of water every day.
SWEAT
I travel a lot and it’s easy to lose motivation between time zones. But I know that getting the blood pumping around my body is the best thing for my flagging energy levels. So, wherever I am, I commit to working out three times a week. I’ll block out an hour and do a combination of my EVERYBODY With Iskra fitness videos on Youtube, starting with some HIIT and finishing with yoga.
FOLLOW
I’m a big believer in surrounding yourself with people who build you up. I’m a long-time fan of the @nourishandeat Instagram account – and I actually ended up becoming friends with Gina, who runs it. It’s dedicated to eating disorder recovery and self-care. I learn so much scrolling through her feed – and it always leaves me feeling incredible.
REFLECT
The days I feel down on my body are few and far between, but random things can take me back to my early modelling days, when I was convinced I wasn’t good enough. The other day I nearly cried in a changing room when I couldn’t get a pair of jeans – the largest size the store had – over my knees. I had to stop those thoughts and remind myself: you are enough.
INDULGE
If I feel like a brownie, I’ll eat a brownie. The same goes for Häagen-dazs Belgian Chocolate ice cream. I eat intuitively and I love it: I don’t feel controlled by calories or as if I have to finish what’s on my plate. I’m able to enjoy the taste of food, confident in the knowledge that I’ll stop when I’m full.
EXPERIMENT
One of the best things about travelling so much for work is getting to try so many different cuisines. Right now, I’m in LA and taking full advantage of their inventive restaurants. My favourite is a vegan Mexican place in West Hollywood called Gracias Madre. I can’t go there and not order the nachos. Their guacamole is the best.
LISTEN
My current training soundtrack is Tory Lanez’s new album. It’s upbeat R&B, but relaxing too; I don’t like anything too intense when I’m working out. And I love Solange: her music, her style – everything she stands for. I sat next to her on a flight once and she was just amazing.
BOOST
Gratitude lists are great, and they don’t have to be a solitary activity. One of my friends is having a tough time at work right now so, in the morning, everyone in our Whatsapp group will share their gratitude list for the day. It’s hilarious – sometimes they’ll be things as mundane as, ‘I ate my favourite muffin this morning.’ I love having that positive back-and-forth every day.
