SEYCHELLES
What? Punctuating honeymoon beach vibes with tropical trails worth the sweat Where? Félicité, Seychelles How much? One-bedroom pool villas at Six Senses Zil Pasyon start at around £1,238 per night, inclusive of breakfast, tax and service; sixsenses.com
Walking? When there’s butler service and a beach a-calling? Thinking that they’re mutually exclusive is a mistake. Yes, Seychelles conjures up postcard-like images of swimwear-clad figures lazing in hammocks looking out at the sparkling turquoise ocean (my Instagram feed is proof of that, should you require it) but there are satisfyingly heavy-duty hiking trails to be tackled if you’re up for it. There are 115 islands to choose from (who knew?), but Félicité is the fifth largest of the archipelago and strikes the perfect balance. One third a luxury resort – Six Senses
Zil Pasyon – and two thirds national park, the latter makes perfect hiking ground.
How tough are we talking?
A landscape of sun-baked granite rockery and dense jungle means you’re guaranteed to break a sweat from the humidity alone, though if you set off at sunrise, as your Six Senses guide suggests, you’ll be able to complete the three-hour hike before temperatures really peak and those beads of perspiration will be down to your exertion efforts instead. Go you. Ask the resort chef to whip you up some coconut macaroons to nibble as you look out on to the spectacular vista of the lush greenery and jewel-like lagoon waters below. Keep an eye out for the island’s famous Coco de Mer palm trees, too, the seeds of which (pictured) are the largest in the world (next dinner party fact, done) and are used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda to treat conditions such as throat complaints and upset stomachs. Plus, they resemble male and female genitalia, which provides an alternative photo op if the dreamy surroundings don’t do it for you. No? Just me? And if I get a taste for trekking over an endless stream of tangerine daiquiris delivered to my lounger?
Just hop on the resort’s free water shuttle to neighbouring island Praslin for a hike ending on their world-famous beach, Anse Lazio, or Mahé, to trek to the stunning Sauzier Waterfall. Hiking in Seychelles? Completed it, mate.
