Confused about food supplements? We put your questions to the experts

WHERE SHOULD I BUY SUPPLEMENTS?

The brands you’ll find in your local health-food store (virtual or otherwise) are subject to EU regulations around purity, safety and marketing claims (these EU regulations will continue in the short term in the UK), however, supplements bought online are not always subject to this legislation.

CAN I TAKE TOO MANY?

Though the risk of doing any damage via the watersoluble vitamins (C and Bs) is limited, there is some evidence of damage caused by fat-soluble vitamins (A, D and E) accumulating in the body. Toxicity from vitamin A, for example, has been found to cause symptoms such as vomiting and dizziness. But the risk is low, with levels safe up to 3,000mcg per day, five times the RNI.

IS IT SAFE TO BUY COMBINED SUPPLEMENTS?

Yes. This should give you the optimal dose, as many of these are aimed at specific health areas, such as bone health and pregnancy, and will contain the appropriate nutrient levels. But if you’re buying separate supplements, make sure you’re not doubling up on any nutrients – especially fat-soluble vitamins.
