Current UK guidelines say 10mcg is the target for anyone over the age of one. While your first port of call is sunshine, you’ll need to supplement in autumn and winter, when you won’t be seeing much sun. ‘Those with darker skin tones should supplement all year round, as higher melanin levels make it harder for the sun to penetrate the skin,’ says dietitian Catherine Rabess.
