THE MALDIVES

- Faye Mcnulty, WH contributor

What: The ultimate luxury escape

Where: Ozen by Atmosphere, Maadhoo in the Maldives

How much: Seven nights in an Earth Villa from £3,800 per person, based on two people sharing, all-inclusive, including flights from Heathrow and speedboat transfers with Tropic Breeze; tropicbreeze.co.uk

A solo escape to the Maldives… I thought it was for honeymooners?

I thought so, too. I pictured nauseating newlyweds cavorting in crystal clear waters and snogging smugly at sunset. And while there may have been a few, it turns out all sorts of travellers – singles included – head to this corner of paradise for the ultimate treat-yourself wellness getaway. Whether you want to chill in one of Ozen’s pictureperfect postcard villas (yes, the kind you’ve always wanted to stay in), swap city life for a fitness retreat with a side of Zen, or get over a break-up and plough through the minibar (guilty), Ozen’s got your back.

I’m keen for a wellness holiday. How do I get me some of that fitness and Zen?

If you love to work up an appetite when you’re at a resort, especially when it’s all-inclusive, then Ozen

is for you. The gym boasts a panoramic view of the dreamy turquoise Indian Ocean, and you can opt for a PT session, join one of the many fitness classes or do a solo workout while working on your tan (even burpees are bearable when you’re doing them on a white sand beach with the ocean lapping at your toes). As for the Zen, be sure to catch the traditional dhoni boat for sunrise yoga (you may even spot some dolphins during your vinyasa flow) or head to the peaceful Elena Wellness Complex for a signature massage – delicious after all those burpees.

Speaking of delicious, where can I indulge after that exertion?

You’ve come to the right place. Ozen is foodie heaven, with a choice of six restaurants to sample. Refuel at The Palms for all-day dining or plant yourself at the chef’s table at R.A.W for a nutritious sushi platter. Oh, and when you get bored of dining above sea level (stay with me), submerge yourself at M6m, an underwater (underwater!) restaurant where I was treated to a five-course feast of the most scrumptious seafood as I peered out in awe at the marine life passing by. I’m still thinking about those scallops. At sunset, I decided to be sociable and joined other travellers at beach bar Joie De Vivre to watch the sky melt over the lagoon.

And if I’d rather swerve the small talk?

There’s plenty of fun to be had solo. Get back to your villa, pour yourself a glass of something from the minibar (it’s all included, replenished twice daily and isn’t so mini), put on a playlist and dance beneath the stars. I’m calling it: solo honeymoons are the way forward.
