ALGAE SKINCARE

-

Algae has been floating around in skincare for a while (La Mer, we’re looking at you), thanks to its stellar nutrient profile. But a growing demand for natural formulas along with the arrival of lab-grown algae has seen this particular plant protein make a splash in skincare of late.

WHY IT’S BUZZY

‘Algaes are mini-powerhouses of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, polysaccharides and amino and fatty acids,’ says Noella Gabrielle, co-founder of Elemis. According to one study, astaxanthin, which naturally occurs in algae, was found to be 6,000 times more potent an antioxidant than vitamin C, and

550 times stronger than green tea catechins. Such dense concentrations of skin-boosting components explain why algae is credited with maintaining suppleness, reducing the appearance of fine lines (by inhibiting enzymes that break down collagen) and reducing inflammation from UV exposure.

BEHIND THE BUZZ

In terms of plant-based skincare, it’s hard to beat algae for stimulating the production of collagen and dermal fibroblasts (cells found within the dermis that help skin to repair itself). However, whether these aquatic antiagers can rival more studied ingredients like retinol or acids is unlikely.

THE WH VERDICT

There’s more than enough proof to show that algae is a great hydrator, especially when it comes to sensitive, blemish-prone skin. And unlike acids and retinol, seaweed isn’t known to cause any side effects, such as irritation or redness. Plus, because there are so many different types, it can be formulated in a range of products; that you’ll find it in cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums and masks makes it an easy ingredient to incorporate into your existing routine. The bottom line? If you’ve got sensitive skin and are looking to treat a number of skin issues simultaneously, then algaebased skincare is worth seeking out.
