SCANDI SKINCARE

-

Much like their approach to interior design, the Scandi skincare trend can be encapsulated in a single word: minimalist.

WHY IT’S BUZZY

Swedish skin scientist Dr Johanna Gillbro explains that healthy, glowing skin is achievable whatever your age – if you’re willing to ditch most of your skincare regime. ‘The more ingredients your skin is exposed to, the higher the risk of a negative reaction. A layer-on-layer effect means that you can get a high concentration of certain compounds, such as preservatives.’ she says. A recent study found excessive cleansing habits to be a substantial risk factor for rosacea, for example. The Scandi approach is holistic, with a focus on stress reduction, healthy eating and regular exercise.

BEHIND THE BUZZ

‘I agree that it’s unnecessary to have too many steps in the morning and evening – it can increase the risk of sensitivity, irritation and potential allergy, and manifest as redness, peeling, flaking or even eczema,’ says Dr Mahto, who points out that it’s also important to acknowledge that skin health doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and no skincare routine can outsmart poor lifestyle choices. As for the preservatives? ‘You needn’t worry about the concentration of preservatives in skincare,’ she adds. ‘This is tightly regulated and levels vary depending on the type of ingredient and whether it’s in a “leave-on” versus “rinse-off” product.’

THE WH VERDICT

What’s not to love? A pared back routine has the potential to save you time and money, is good for the planet and encourages you to think about beauty from the inside out.

It’s a ‘ja’ from us.
